Asked by Brian Carruthers

The update logo appeared on the top panel with the following error message:

E: Type '??????' (my admin password) is not known on line 36 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.

I've tried to correct the problem without succes.
I can't access the synaptic package manager

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Brian

In the file manager "nautilus" which you can get to via Places --> Home, choose "filesystem" on the left, then navigate to etc, then apt within that. Find sources.list and open it.

Thanks for posting the file contents.

Everything *after* the line

deb-src http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main

does not beling into this file.

You need to remove those lines and then reload the repository information, which you can do in the package manager you use.

I hope this helps
