I had the same question/issue sometime back. Take a look at this...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=318789

I opted to NOT update my BIOS because there was some question re: Toshiba machines; and the value add of updating my BIOS did not offset the risk of bricking my box...no matter how small the risk.

Good Luck.

you MUST have a SYSTEM (dos bootable) floppy diskette that ALSO MUST contain, in addition to the boot files, the minimum TWO other files - one of them is usually an .exe file and the other is the so called .bin file that contains the new BIOS code.

set up your BIOS so that the FLOPPY drive is the FIRST boot device, save the configuration and insert the FLOPPY created above so the system BOOTS INTO DOS.

once you see the A: prompt enter the command, PLS Check with BIOS provider how to enter the command FIRST!!!!, it is
usually

xxxxxxx.exe yyyyyyy.bin

return

DO NOT DISTURB THIS OPERATION ONCE STARTED - you may end up with a DISFUNCTIONAL/good for nothing PC!!!
