If memory serves me right, MythTV could do the trick for that. There is a project called Mythbuntu, with packages available in Ubuntu if you search for it with the Synaptic Package Manager.

Need a video capture card installed and configured, then plug a RCA conector to "VHS out" to "Video in" video capture card.

What is the commercial mark of your video capture?

I decided to use Mythtv. I installed it, but, damn!, I can't understand how to see vhs. I try on several web pages, but it seems to me very complicated. Can anyone help me?

One little question: it is possible to see directly the vhs, or I have to convert it in another format?

This information is necessary to correct setting up in Mythbuntu

Excuse me, Jacob! Yesterday I was hurry...
Ok, my card is a Zoran. Mythtv sees it, and report analog v4l video capture card. Lshw report this:

*-multimedia:1 UNCLAIMED
             description: Multimedia video controller
             product: ZR36057PQC Video cutting chipset
             vendor: Zoran Corporation
             physical id: c
             bus info: pci@0000:00:0c.0
             version: 02
             width: 32 bits
             clock: 33MHz
             configuration: latency=32 maxlatency=16 mingnt=2

I read how to see vhs on www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/227647 and tried. I couldn't find channel script in input connections.

Then I try to record a vhs and it seems that recording works, because my record appears in the section "watch records". But when I start it, my screen becomes blank and 20 seconds later mythtv returns to the menu. I copied the last lines of mythfrontend.log:

I only want to see my vhs, is it mythtv the best way? It seems to me very complicated.

1.- Ok, firts you need a v4l, to install, open Terminal and command :

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-v4l

2.- Now is necessary a remove a module driver for a Zoran (if think with you have a Pinnacle/Miro DC10+)
Note: please from First to Last, and can get a FATAL, (please don't be worry) this removed the last configurations:

sudo modprobe -r zr36050_alsa
sudo modprobe -r zr36050_dvb
sudo modprobe -r zr36050

2.- Now you reinstall the module with a new configuration (It only works i you have a Pinncle/Miro DC30, Important If you get a Fatal, post me):

sudo modprobe zr36050 card=1

NOTE: Your TV capture card only work with a Correct Match of card=x a and zr360xx

For more information at this online site:

http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/Zoran_devices_(zr36057,_zr36067)

3.- Play a VHS tape and open tvtime is not recommend but can probably work (v4l recommend xawtv) or MythTV, (sure the connections are work).

Please if you not have a Pinnacle/Miro DC30, correct to me.

Thanks!
I'm going to try your settings!
Two questions:

-How can i know what video capture card I have? On the card I find Pinnacle DC10+, not more specifications.

-When I'm running Mythtv, my Ram used are more than 200 MB, and I have only 218 MB. Do you think it's possible to me to use Mythtv? Maybe it's better tvtime, than seems to me lighter.

FATAL!

sudo modprobe -r zr36050_alsa
sudo modprobe -r zr36050_dvb

FATAL: Module zr36050_alsa not found.

Instead the third line doesn't create problems.

sudo modprobe zr36050 card=1

FATAL: Error inserting zr36050 (/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/kernel/drivers/media/video/zr36050.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Ok, I have a DC10+ or DC10plus, that I think it is the same. I tried your lines changing 36050 with 36060. The first and the second told me fatal, the third this:

FATAL: Module zr36060 is in use.

The fourth, changing card=1 in card=2, worked.

Ok, Explain
the page on V4l is info unfortunately for experts, but I try to guide you,

The error Fatal is the incorrect driver to tv card (not use a zr36050) you then this options:

sudo modprobe zr36060
sudo modprobe zr36057
sudo modprobe zr36050
sudo modprobe zr36016

The variable of card is this:

card=0 Pinnacle/Miro DC10(old)
card=1 Pinnacle/Miro DC10(new)
card=2 Pinnacle/Miro DC10+
card=3 Pinnacle/Miro DC30
card=4 Pinnacle/Miro DC30+
card=5 Linux Media Labs LML33
card=6 Linux Media Labs LML33R10
card=7 Iomega Buz

For post me copy and paste in box please.

New information in this site: http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/driver-zoran/documentation.php

This say: Load zoran.o. If it can't autodetect your card, use the card=X insmod
option

And this this alternate metod:

sudo modprobe -r zoran
sudo modprobe zoran card=2

Now this site recommend that use packages xawtv and to record mjpegtools/lavtools

But tvtime doesn't work because of the xvideo, and mythtv doesn't work.
I downloaded xawtv. Can you help me setting it? Now I check for manual, but this stuff of tv and video is too hard for me.

Hello, Jacob.

I don't know almost anything about video capturing, digital tv and another stuff. I need explanations step by step. If you can send me to an howto or a wiki it's ok for me, but I need more help.

I ask you some questions:

1) What about having only 213 MB of RAM? They are enough to capture vhs signal? And to see it directly?

2) In that link you provided, the author says that the zoran card aren't good to show directly a video signal, but they are very good in capturing and showing later. Do you think the same? I have to capture and see? I hoped to use my pc to see directly vhs.

3) What about xvideo extensions that my card doesn't support (I believe)? I need that gatos driver?

4) I want to try xawtv. I downloadad even motv, the gui for it. Can you explain me how to set it to capture vhs and to watch them? Step by step, sorry (I'm Italian, so some tecnical terms are confusing for me)

5) What about overlay and deinterlace? What do they means? To capture a vhs a need overlay or deinterlace?

I tried a little xawtv and motv. I tried "record" in order to capture my vhs, but, with every screen configuration, the result is: now way to get ... (selected screen configuration).

no way to get: 384x288 24 bit TrueColor (BE: rgb)
(for example)

Adding of this, xawtv teels me:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct

Michelle, is very important to copy and paste the prompt of dmesg in the message box, open Terminal and command:

dmesg

Michelle, do you can watching the VCR in the monitor of your PC with xawtv?

Michelle xawtv is only for watching, do not try to record whit this. Fore record you can try with the packages.

Capturing is watching in the screen monitor.
Recording is write a video archive into your PC.

In several blogs in Internet I find that is the process:

1.- Open Terminal and command (please don't open xawtv)

sudo modprobe zr36060 v4l_bufsize=180 card=2 v4l_nbufs=32

Then open xawtv and sure that setting the Composite or S-Video set (TV not, I think that your card is don not have a TV tuner). You need VCR connected with RCAs and a movie tape into it on play, do you can watch the movie? (report me a FATAL)

If not watch the movie please reboot the PC an try with:

sudo modprobe zr36067 v4l_bufsize=180 card=2 v4l_nbufs=32

(Remember: This configuration only works one time for boot and report me a FATAL )

2.- To record your movies in to PC do not use xawtv, you need a specialised software that linuxvideostudio and mpegtools

Good Luck and hope your helps, and please report me dmesg Michell

The first setting doesn't work. I didn't have a FATAL, but xawtv don'show nothing. Maybe I have to set one channel to see vcr? Initially I didn't set any, now I set one, but I don't know what channel (frequency, I guess) and station id to put.

I connected the things in this way:

My vcr is connected to my video capture card with two wires. The first is an svideo. The second I think a rca (for audio). To the side of the vcr, the two wires are connected with an adaptor for scart.
On the video capture card I connected the wires (one svideo an one audio) to the video in hole. On the vcr my scart is in the in/out ---- son/video exit, instead of the other one in/decoder ---canal plus. I don't know if this last one is correct.

For what I know xawtv is a suit that uses mpegtools to record. I had one package of this, libmjpegtools02ca, but I don't have the other two, libmjpegtools-dev and mjpegtools.

Now I will reboot and try your second option, if i don't post more, then I don't get more informations.

Thank you for using your time helping me.

In You dmesg you have several problems:

i2c-adapter i2c-0: Error: command never complete

This a module to your video capture card.

The modules are proudly (with a Lego pieces), You need more modules to load and a type of "experience on how work this" unfortunately in GNU/Linux video capture is not very easy, is for very experiment user. I recommend to you to try to search a person to a new answer in Launchpad that this are resolved the problem, asking.

Where I make to work a Pinnacle/Miro DC10plus with a Zoran in Ubuntu?

I can guided to you, but at risk of frustrating your experience with GNU/LInux, probabably in a 2 or 3 month of postings.
