ATI Radeon driver problem ?

Asked by greennerd

Tried the AMD/ATI proprietary FGLRX driver in the system meny in ubuntu 8.10. It didnt work with my ati (rv350) radeon 9600 pro card. It didnt work and the setup process changed the xorg setup which was working well apart for the 3d effects. After i had tried the FGLRX driver my video files started to run badly and i chose to reinstall to get the original 8.10 setup back. Now i dare not try it again in fear of loosing my current setup. But really would like to try out the 3d effects in ubuntu.

I own an ATI Radeon 9700 graphics card and had similar problems in the past. I also learned the hard way how the FGLRX driver can impact the whole system. I wrote a post about it on my blog this past year.
Bottom line is to never use the FGLRX driver, but instead to install the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver if it isn't already installed. Then you can install compiz. Hopefully, this works for you.
