Slimming down Ubuntu Install

Asked by Matti Toikka

Hi all,

First off I just want to throw out there, please excuse me / bear with me, I am a bit of a newb to Linux, I used to use live CDs quite a bit a while back but I am now trying go a little further with this phenominon and actually install / use Linux on a daily basis.

My question is actually more of a challange but from what everyone who uses Linux has to say, I think this is possible, just not sure how to go about it.

I have 1 GB thumb drive I would like to install Ubuntu to, NOT copy a live CD to and make bootable. I have tried the persistent bootable thumbdrive guides out there but its not quite what I am looking for. Anyway, it will not fit on a 1GB thumbdrive, and my question/challenege for anyone whos up to it, It is my assumption that a normal install of ubuntu comes with open office and a bunch of other apps. Is it at all possible to slim down an install of ubuntu, like, uncheck/not install a bunch of software I really wont need or use in order to get it to fit on a 1GB usb key?? if not I guess I am going to buy a new usb key...a bigger USB key...but any help or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks guys!

Mr. Toikka

hi, mr toikka! i'm not a linux/ubuntu expert either, but from what i've learned, this isn't possible at the moment. there are some other things to consider though. first, not all computers have the capacity of booting from a usb/thumb drive. check first if yours has that feature. and if you are trying to do this because you want to be able to open your own system from a usb, you might want to have a look at puppy linux. it's another linux distro that is somehow designed to be installed onto usb drives. check this page out: http://www.puppylinux.org/

Can you help with this problem?
