Does Intel WiFi Link 5100 work under Hardy Heron?

Asked by Sebastian Gaul on 2008-10-18

I've just ordered a new notebook, HP's Compaq 6530b. For wlan there's a "Intel WiFi Link 5100" in it. I heard it's good but I've heard also about problems with Linux. In a german Ubuntu forum i have read that it doesn't work under hardy without ndiswrapper but under intrepid ibex it does.

Has anyone experiences about that? Could there be a way to make it work under a general Hardy? Or is this kernel specific and so intrepid or it least it's kernel will be needed? I hope somebody can tell me more about soon, so I could send the laptop back if there would be so much problems...

Hi,

The following link seems to confirm your suspicions and answer your question:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=950376&highlight=WiFi+Link+5100

So, it seems that this card works out of the box on Intrepid Ibex, but not in Hardy Heron.

Regards,

Mark

Another solution is to use wicd instead of network-manager.. On my Dell works like a charm.. More info about wicd available at wicd.sourceforge.net..

Cheers..

Uh... Do you have an Intel Wifi Link 5100 in it? I can't really believe that the support of this card depends on the network manager... Or does wicd more than only "manage" networks?
