Cannot login to KDE

Asked by Thomas Kluyver

Have just upgraded to Kubuntu Intrepid Beta from Kubuntu-KDE4 Hardy. After some fiddling, the KDM login screen comes up, but attempting to login to a normal KDE session briefly shows a konsole window without any window decorations, before returning me to the KDM login screen with no error messages.

I'd appreciate even a pointer on where I might look for relevant logs--I have no idea what files it may be looking in.

Graphics card is ATI--X initially didn't come up at all, but after reconfiguring xserver-xorg (which I assume has made it use the open source drivers for the moment), the login screen appears as detailed above.

(The workaround that lets me post this, if anyone else needs it, is that I've used the terminal to install fvwm, and selecting fvwm from the KDM login screen does work, although it's a bit awkward...)

Thanks in advance

Thomas

Happily it seems that something I did to it magically made it work. No idea what, and I'd still be intrigued if anyone has any ideas what was going on, but I'm in no hurry to repeat the experience.

Take a look at .xsession-errors in your home-directory, maybe thats where you can find hints what were wrong.
Additionally you could take a look at /var/log/* , there are most log-files located. "ls -latr" in this directory lists all log files, ordered by last edit time, newest last.
