This message usually means that kernel can't find your root partition

"Kernel panic" - error in kernel
"not syncing" - no disk is mounted, so there is nothing to sync

Attempted to kill init! - when kernel starts is tries to execute "init" application, but here "init" isn't supposed to exit, but it did here.

There can be several reasons for this:

1 - You compiled the kernel, and forgot to add there disk drivers/and or filesystem drivers
If you compiled it, tell what hardware system has, (motherboard especially)

2 - Kernel is standard, but you tell it wrong root location:

When you see grub prompt, press "up" or "down" key to stop the countdown timer, then try to select different kernels in the list.
I suggest you to read tutorial about grub.
Take a look at google for that.

Can you help with this problem?
