some more on the dd command

I am wanting to learn more about , using the dd command to copy hard drives ,both ubuntu and windows xp. I read a question and reply earlier, it touched on ubuntu but not on a windows os. And what should I be looking for to avoid damaging my operating system I'm using.Thanks
