Using the Ipod Nano

Asked by falfam

Hi,
I've got the NEW GENERATION of the Ipod Nano (Slim Black 8 Gig Nano).

The question is: how can i get this to work with ubuntu? PLEASE REMEMBER i'm a complete newbie who love linux and ALL it stands for. ALSO I AM WILLING AND READY TO PAY FOR A GREAT DISTRIBUTION OF LINUX IF IT WORKS WITH THIS IPOD.

Thanks to all of you out there who work hard on all of these projects....!!

Have you tried using either Banshee, rhythmbox or gtkpod under gnome (Ubuntu) or amarok under kde (Kubuntu)?

I have not tried gtkpod as of yet.....but will let you know if i can get it to work. I have tried Banshee and Rhythmbox and Amarok with some success. The problem also is the fact that i can't really transfer to and fro (from the ipod to ubuntu and back again..sync). Do i need to only use mp3 or something else for this particular ipod. apple seems to use m4p which i need to somehow convert? to another format before i can use the particular music file.....

THANKS FOR YOUR GREAT HELP.....!

Hi Jeff,

there are some kinds of copy protection @ apples iPods, that's why you are regulary not able to get music off the iPods. You could drag the music into the USB-Storage-Like-Memory of the iPod, but then you cannot play it, cause it is handled as a file only.

There exists a Java application which is able to copy music from the iPod, http://freshmeat.net/projects/podsblitz/ - according to the homepage of the project, the iPod needs to be mounted a special way under Linux- but this should not be a problem.

mp4 itself is no problem - mplayer can play these files (which means it is audio according to the MPEG4-Standard - called Advanced Audio Codec) but AAC is able to integrate some kind of DRM which might keep you from playing certain files bought at the iTMS.
