Is It A Good Idea To Install IceWM ?

Asked by taurus

Someone suggested that I substitute Gnome for IceWM as my default desktop manager.

1) Does IceWM eat up less resources than Gnome?

2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of IceWm over Gnome?

'icewm' is just a window manager, all it does is put borders on your windows (where the minimise, maximize, close buttons and the title go) and let you move the window around on your screen. gnome is a desktop environment, it provides all your software. replacing gnomes window manager with icewm won't eat up very much less resources (maybe a megabyte of ram? if your lucky)

this is the list of features from the icewm homepage:
    * Fully usable with keyboard
    * Alt+Tab window switching
    * Efficient resource usage
    * Task bar (optional)
    * Multiple workspaces
    * Themes
    * Usable with GNOME and KDE environments

you will not get any desktop effects with this window manager
