cannot open/run 6.o6

Hello.

Have just downloaded my first linux OS - Ubuntu 6.06, onto an old (Win 98) PC. The file downloaded onto desktop as an ".iso" - but then I try to run it, the file type not recognised. Anyone help?

You need to burn the iso as an image to a CD and boot from the CD.
