It's an MTP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol) device which is implemented in Linux via libmtp (http://libmtp.sf.net) which is available in Ubuntu (http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=libmtp&searchon=names&subword=1&version=all&release=all)- but not the latest version, which might mean that support for the gigabeat may be lacking.

If you really want to use the gigabeat under Ubuntu then I would check with the libmtp people that your device is supported then if it is, wait a week until feisty is released, install that or upgrade to it, then file a bug request asking for the latest version of libmtp to be backported to feisty.

http://libmtp.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=compatibility indicates that the Gigabeat S is indeed supported by the libmtp driver people.
