want to install Xubuntu 8.10 beta along side my 8.04 gnome without booting issues

Asked by Kev

Hi all
I have XP and Hardy gnome running well at the moment and want to now play with Xubuntu 8.10 beta
I have a separate partition waiting for it but my main concern is the GRUB booting thing.... at the moment all I have is XP and Hardy..... all playing nice with each other when I boot. Will the new 8.10 rewrite the MBR and drop my hardy ubuntu and replace itself (8.10) there in stead? or do I answer a final question in the installation on 8.10 and tell it do play nice with my other distros?
Thanks for ant advice.

you dont have absolutely to install Xubuntu to have it. You can just install the "xubuntu-desktop" package via synaptic and choose it at the "Sessions" when logging in but anyways if you want to install it you have different ways of not loosing grub :

1. Install Xubuntu in your partition and if grub deletes the choices of your other Operating Systems you can manually add them later editing /boot/grub/menu.lst

2. The easy way : You can use the Hardy Live CD to reinstall grub doing this commands in the live cd terminal :

sudo grub

find /boot/grub/stage1 - (copy the output of this command and add it in the line below)

root (hd?,?) - use the value that you will get from the above line - example -> (hd0,0) or (hd0,1)

setup (hd?) - use the first number from the value you got before - example -> (hd0)

quit

And restart your PC. Anyways i think you should not have to do this commands because everything will be fine after the installation.

Hope this helps. Have a good day
