Places-Homefolder keeps showing up on desktop

Asked by mamacaz

I want to create new folders in the homefolder only, but it keeps showing up on my desktop as well. If I delete it, it also deletes from the home folder.

I was told to do ALT F2
gconf- (something like that)
then navigate to nauticals or something desktop - dir (something like that) and uncheck the box.
I did that then restarted my computer as this was not working, and it still isn't.

How can I correct this problem.

Please help.

mamacaz redo it step by step carefully.

Do Alt + F2

write : gconf-editor and press enter

go to : apps - nautilus - desktop and uncheck the box for : home_icon_visible

restart the pc and it should do the trick. at least this is the way i know

Oh
Sorry.

When I click PLACES then HOMEFOLDER all the desktop folders come up.

I am tryint to create my own folders. MUSIC-DOCUMENTS etc...

I don't even have a side bar to the left?

I was given advice that ended up wiping out my folders. Just keeps opening up to desktop folders..
Need help still.

this just brought the icon up on my desktop. I need to add folders in the home folder. But Unsure why all the desktop icon are there too?

Do Alt + F2
write : gconf-editor and press enter
go to : apps - nautilus - desktop and uncheck the box for
PREFERENCES
desktop_is_home_dir box is unchecked

Hi,
I guess we talk about two different things here.

a) we don't want an icon of the home directory on the desktop
open gconf-editor in applications -> system tools and navigate to
/apps/nautilus/desktop/home_icon_visible and deacitvate
## in this path other icons on the desktop can be made visible or not

this path is unchecked when the home directory shouldn't be used as desktop
/apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir

System tools
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SystemTools

gconf-editor
http://library.gnome.org/users/gconf-editor/2.22/getting-started.html.en

##any frequently visited path can be bookmarked within gconf-editor which makes navigation easier.
##the last edited keys can be searched also -> menu -> edit

b) create a folder within the home directory using the file manager Nautilus
http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/gosnautilus-492.html.en

##settings for Nautilus can be made right there or in gconf-editor apps/nautilus

depending on configuration in which mode Nautilus should present folders
e.g. browser mode
on the left: tree view
on the right: list view

If there is not already a folder 'Music'
right click on empty space within home/user -> create new folder

If we bookmark the folder 'Music' it will appear on the panel -> places and open directly within Nautilus.
If we want 'Music' to open alone, we change the behavior in preferences and uncheck 'always open in browser windows'
http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/gosnautilus-56.html.en

Enjoy Ubuntu

Add,
after editing within gconf-editor changes take place right away, no need to restart computer.
