Which linux operating system is best for use on a real old computer?

Asked by guidemeintheeyesofblindness@yahoo.com

I'm running ubuntu 8.o4 now and it works well. My computer is ancient.

Is there another linux operating system that is more suitable for such and old computer?

I've heard arch and puppy are good but they seem a bit complicated to install.

Any suggestions?

If you can run Hardy (8.04) then your computer must not be too ancient or at least you have bumped up the RAM. If you want a bit snappier system you could try xubuntu. It's basically a somewhat lighter version of Ubuntu so most things will feel similar but the desktop interface is a bit different thought not drastically.

If you want even lighter than that then you will probably want to go with something like DSM (damn small linux) or puppy. Knoppix could be an option too though I've not used it much. If Ubuntu runs fine then there probably isn't a need to change unless you just want a bit quicker system. You can also explore changing the window manager. Gnome isn't that heavy but there are other that are much lighter like openbox, icewin and others.

Perhaps Elive is good to try. Please read and download it carefully from this site:
