Ubuntu (Edgy): Synaptic error - CAN NOT UPDATE
Okay, so I run Synaptic, and try to update everything on this copy of Ubuntu I got with "Ubuntu Linux For Dummies", right? It says
"The list of available applications is out of date
To reload the list you need a working internet connection."
so I click reload. (I'm working off a network, with a connection to dialup via Windows Vista. Hey, it's not perfect, but it's getting this message from my computer to yours.) After punching in the password, and attempting to update, I get the following:
Could not download all repository indexes
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

So, as a newb to Linux (having just installed it Friday), can anyone help? I'm just trying to install new programs, like Wine and chess. Maybe even (eventually) this old disk of MechWarrior 2 I found lying around.
