Ubuntu (Edgy): Synaptic error - CAN NOT UPDATE

Asked by UXProphetas

Okay, so I run Synaptic, and try to update everything on this copy of Ubuntu I got with "Ubuntu Linux For Dummies", right? It says

"The list of available applications is out of date

To reload the list you need a working internet connection."

so I click reload. (I'm working off a network, with a connection to dialup via Windows Vista. Hey, it's not perfect, but it's getting this message from my computer to yours.) After punching in the password, and attempting to update, I get the following:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

So, as a newb to Linux (having just installed it Friday), can anyone help? I'm just trying to install new programs, like Wine and chess. Maybe even (eventually) this old disk of MechWarrior 2 I found lying around.

It's worth noting that I tried the apt-get command with the Wine installation, but it didn't seem to work. Hardy Heron should be coming in the mail sometime between Oct. 10th (friday) and the 24th. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure I have that long... We might be moving in with some friends.

the Edgy eft version of ubuntu is not supported anymore as it is quite old, thus the updating mechanism doesn't work anymore.

if you want a more up-to-date version of ubuntu you will need to install a newer version. you can either upgrade your current version to the 'feisty fawn' version of ubuntu (via this guide: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/upgrade-ubuntu-610-edgy-eft-to-ubuntu-704-feisty-fawn-2.html) and then upgrade the feisty fawn to hardy heron (via this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FeistyUpgrades)

or you can download/order a free cd of the current version of ubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Well, that blows. Hardy Heron is due sometime between the 10th and the 24th, but due to family issues, we're probably moving out before then, unless I can stall mom long enough... Oh well, guess I'll have to reinstall Windows.

It was nice while it lasted, guys. Thanks, I guess, and keep up the good work.
