my mac alternative

Asked by electricbluluv

Hello,

I have an idea that may save me 2000 dollars buying a MacPro. I just need some pro-thoughts about it. Here goes:

I will buy a pc, a sony vaio with vista(32-bit). And on this os I will do NOTHING but work with programs my school requires me to work with: CS3, corel painter. I won't even surf the net. Windows will be nothing but a working machine. For entertainment, basically anything else I need, I will use some kind of VM software to run Linux and windows at the same time.

My question is will I have that virus-proof asset of linux if I dualboot it? If so, which VM software would someone reccommend?

mm if you do dualboot the linux part will be virusproof but not windows. Why you dont only install linux and use WINE for the programs your school requires? Good idea to save money.

Hi,

I recommend to not use dual boot at all. I would install Linux as the host (real) operating system and then install Windows XP inside Virtualbox. Virtualbox is an open source virtualization program that can be installed natively in Linux. Windows XP inside VirtualBox can then run CS3, Corel Painter, etc...

You can download Virtualbox for free here: http://virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

Mark

That sounds even cooler, Mark Rijckenberg, but will Virtualbox run CS3 and Corel Painter natively?

Oh, and WINE has limits on the windows programs. WINE can be updated for more programs, but it's not enough to rely on. Thanks anyway.

Enjoy,

Mike

Hi,

Yes, you can run CS3 in Virtualbox on Linux. Here is how: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=587779

So it was already possible a year ago. Now everything has improved even more :-)

Only problem you might have is with the performance. If your PC only has 2 GB of RAM, then I think CS3 will run slowly in VirtualBox. If you have 4 GB of RAM, everything will run nice and smooth, both inside and outside VirtualBox....

This link shows that Corel Painter also runs in Virtualbox: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=391189
