Speed up booting via compiling bash scripts?

Asked by TGM

For Jaunty, boot times are to be massively reduced.

I had a few thoughts on the idea, but wasn't sure where to put them, so I will drop them here for comments or development.

My attention come to the startup scripts, which are all bash interpreted scripts (as far as I understand), is there not either:
1. A way to compile scripts into machine language, where all code could run faster, or
2. Replace the script with a call to code translated to a faster scripting language (if there is one?)

Sadly I'm not greatly informed on this subject, but hope either of the above will spark some imagination out there :)

Thanks,
Tom M
