By not supporting they just mean they won't help you. In this sense most don't support Linux becasue they don't want to train their support staff. However, you can use pretty much any ISP with any operating system. The CDs that companies like qwest or comcast send are not needed to set up and use their service. If you are talking about broadband, just hook everything up, then go into the web interface for the modem and add whatever is needed (for example dsl modems will usually have you enter a username and pasword). Cable companies may want to add your modem's mac id to their database. Don't mention Linux, just give them the info they want and you'll be fine. If they ask say you use Linux but are not calling for help, just to have them activate your account/modem.

Now, if you have issues with your computer connecting to the modem then that's differnt. If that's the case, please clarify.

when I try to set up a connection using firefox, I enter the isp address (168.11stc) but when I go to WAN settings it says 'error, entry not allowed'

Martin:

So you are trying to setup the modem with their 'install' cd?

Yeah that will be an issue. In my case I can call and activate it over the phone. All I did was tell them the CD looked defective and they offered to complete the process over the phone.

I'm a newbie so yeah, I need help with wireless... ;-)

I'm having trouble getting my built in wireless to pickup any wireless networks. I have a Acer Aspire 5100. I can't connect either manually or automatically to any wireless networks. I can how ever get a wired connection to work.

Please help me, Thanks in advance ;-)

Sorry typo on my part... lspci is the command to run, not lscpi

From your eth1 output it looks at though that is your wireless card.

So from your lspci output:

06:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

That is your wireless adapter.

From the information I have found on-line it would appear that you should be able to (assuming you can get on-line with a wired connection) choose to use restricted drivers for your card from the System | Administration | Hardware Drivers menu item.
