Asked by Alejandro

I am thinking to buy a laptop. I have up to 900 € . Right know I am begining a master in which i will need to learn linux, and use some linux based software for science. So I was thinking to install UBUNTU when I purchase my laptop, however i would like to have also Windows. (what is a virtual machine? could I install windows and not ubuntu, and whener i would like to practice in linux open the virtual machine? or to be able to use the vistual machine i need to install ubuntu also?).

i would like to know which laptop brand and characteristics are suited for what I want to do. Also if you recomend me a laptop brand it will be great. i am thinking in toshiba and dell, but I dont know about HP or ACER, or maybe other brands.

I would like to have the best procesor, Intel or AMD,
No less than 800 bus
Noless than 2 g RAM
and with all conectivity

with a good graphic hardware but not very good!,

I am in Utrecht, netherlands, so if you could recomend me an store, or a website....

thankss

alejandro

thanks!!! but AAAAA!!!! i almost decide to buy this TOSHIBA (Satellite-A300-1IA).... but I read the link you sent me and it seems the ATI card is not suited for UBUNTU..... AGHHHH I Like that laptop!!!!!!!

take a look, waht do you think. i will see if the ATI card that came with this toshiba maybe dosent have problems

http://nl.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-A300-1IA/1056765/toshibaShop/false/

i Know dell is more suited for ubuntu, but the power of the toshiba is better, i was thinking to buy this dell:

http://configure2.euro.dell.com/dellstore/print_summary_details_popup.aspx?c=nl&cs=nldhs1&fb=1&kc=NRS15304&l=nl&oc=N10X5306&rbc=N10X5306&s=dhs&showleadtime=False&~lt=print

what do you think???/ as i said before, ill see if the ATI card that cames with the toshiba works on ubuntu.. if it works.. maybe ill buy the toshiba.

thanks!!

in my experiance anything with the name 'ati mobility' in it generally has problems with ubuntus desktop effects system - nvidia chips should work fantasticly though. even better if you can find an intel graphics chip (although those are rather low power if you want to do some gaming).

honestly the best thing you can do is to either find a dell laptop with ubuntu pre-installed (as its guarenteed everything will work great on those) or google each componant of the laptop you want to try and find out what problems (if any) other people have had with that componant and ubuntu.

Hi Alejandro,
not very encouraging on Toshiba here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=d30c55d964c3c64a405ef1ccb317d2f6&t=902172

If searching this forum for toshiba A300 or satellite you'll get more on that issue and might get some conclusions.

It seems for a smooth start between Ubuntu and lapi, pre-installed is the answer.
Realization depends on how much one is willing to invest mental and monetary effort.

Can you help with this problem?
