Dell Insipron 5150 won't play DVD's, release 8.0

Asked by Tirrex_Falcon

So I have Ubuntu release 8.0 installed on my Dell Inspiron 5150 and the DVD player won't play DVD's. My drive is just a run of the mill CD-RW/ DVD ROM. In synaptic I have installed....

Search: DVD Playback

kubuntu-restricted-ex 15.2
ogl-mmx 0.9.2-5.1
Totem-gstreamer 2.22.1
totem-xine 2.22.1
Ubuntu-restricted-ext 15.2
Xmms-Xmmplayer 0.3.3
xubuntu-reseticted-ex 15.2

I have tried various combination's and installing each one at a time and nothing changes, Totem still says "Could not read from resource".

Please be gentle I am very Linux/Ubuntu stupid, I have lived in a windows world for far to long.

Thanks,

Hi,

Please first follow the instructions from Vivaldi Gloria here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=886453&highlight=watch+dvd

Then run the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install vlc libdvdnav4 libdvdread3

Then start VLC player (better video player than Totem) and try to play the DVD. It should work.

Regards,

Mark
