unable to mount usb hard drive

Asked by Ian Brownlie

I lent my Maxtor 400Gb usb hard drive to a friend who runs windows and needed to transfer his data to a new laptop that runs Vista. After he finished he deleted his data and returned it to me. The drive that used to mount automatically now tells me it cannot be mounted due to unclean shutdown. The message says 'mount is denied because ntfs is marked as still in use. Help really needed please.
if I run sudo fdisl -l I get

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes

I'm hoping somebody can help, there's some data I really need to access.

Hi
reuse it in windows and shut it down (windows that is, thought you should not have to. I just remove mine and plug in into Ubuntu) then unplug it and should be ok in Ubuntu.
The reason is it seam that windows doesn't away close it down properly. I get that on my PC If I try to open the XP or Vista HDD at times. I have to restart the 1 giving the problem and shut it down then it is ok. (That Microsoft for you lol)
Hope this helps
Regards Neil

Thank you Neil, that worked. Another reminder of why I quit windows. Thanks again.
