Ethernet Connection Problem?

Asked by plymouthjp

I have just recently installed ubuntu 8.04 (64bit) onto my pc, dual booting with vista. The internet works fine when vista is booted but have never managed to get a connection with ubuntu. I have tried many permutations of set up as well as tips from this and other forums but with no luck. I did have ubuntu installed on an old pc but it never required any setting up, it just worked.
- Sometimes when i boot ubuntu in network manager, my wired connection will read (nVidia Corp MCP55 ethernet), although this does not appear every time.
- My motherboard is an Asus p5n32- sli with 2 ethernet connections.
- I can not ping my router.
- In network setti

It looks like your post got cut off. "- In network setti"

It might be helpful to see how Windows is configured and see how Ubuntu is configured.

Running ipconfig in a windows command prompt and ifconfig in an Ubuntu terminal.

Please put more information about your network information. If you need more help please continue asking.

Looking at the Asus page for that motherboard, it looks like you have Intel Gigabit network cards built in. For now (this will be fixed soon) the driver for this hardware has been removed from Ubuntu to prevent permanent damage to the firmware on these NIC's. This is caused by a bug that slipped into the kernel (Intel is working to fix it, but they have released some temporary patches to mitigate the problem for now) that is used in Intrepid and many other Linux distributions.

You can work around this by temporarily installing a NIC in the computer in a PCI slot, or perhaps waiting for the final release of Intrepid. Depending on which driver your hardware uses (e1000 or e1000e), the issue _may_ be fixed on the beta release that was cut earlier today. I suspect you use the e1000e driver, as your computer is PCI-e.
