i tried downloading to install ubuntu but it did not work, now i spent 30.00 and bought the bokk with the cd and the cd dose not work, i am loosing hope......

When you download Ubuntu, you download it as an iso file which has to be unpacked before burning to a disc. If you burn the iso file to a disc without unpacking it then it will not work.

The CD from your book should work. Put the CD into your CD player in your computer and reboot. That will give you a chance to explore Ubuntu before installing.

If your computer will not boot from the CD then you have to go into your BIOS (press F2 or Del on boot) and change the boot sequence so that it boots from CD first before Hard Drive.

if its not loading from the cd then you would have to change the first boot device to cdrom in your BIOS ,your present first boot device must be hard disk ,this must be the reason as to why you are not able to load it

Please tell us in short the download and install steps you have done get the Ubuntu Live install cd...

or is it a dvd which can not be read on cd drive as now a days most of the softwares come on dvd.
check whether your cd writer is working fine with other files just copy and play for testing your writer.
make a bootable cd of ubuntu and follow the instructions as bhuvi said above.
