free and open or proprietary?

For a free (open-source) Flash plugin, install the mozilla-plugin-gnash package. For the proprietary Flash plugin, install the flashplugin-nonfree package.

Could anyone please tell me the difference between the above ie merit / non merit and can you have both installed and in use at same time?

The free flash plug-in is in developing yet, so it won't work with many flash features. The non-free plug-in is compatible with all flash features but you don't have access to the source code.

Having both installed is not recommended--you can only use one at a time.

If you're using open source because of the noble ideals of sharing information, use Gnash, but if you want flash to work consistently, use flashplugin-nonfree, at least for the moment. It's not perfect either, but it generally works.
