headphone jack not recognised ASUS E402s Ubuntu 16.1

Asked by Geoff Kyle

Using Ubuntu 16.1 on an ASUS E402s laptop with standard combination headphone/microphone jack. Headphone is not recognised by <settings> <sound> when plugged in. Sounds continue to play via in-built laptop speakers. When booted to Windows 10 (resident OS when laptop purchased and stored on a separate partition enabling GRUB boot choices) the headphones are recognised and function as expected. Please advise if there is a way around this annoying problem. Thanx ... DrWu.
