How to retreive default upper panel with Ubuntu 8.04

Asked by SuprNova

Hello,

(I use Linux Ubuntu 8.04)

I accidentally deleted my top panel..(I can be stupid sometimes >_<). Now i want to restore the default panel with the default starter buttons but i can't seem to restore it.. I checked for a solution and then i found this 1 but it doesn't work for me.

gnome-session-remove gnome-panel
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
gnome-panel &

Is it possible i entered it wrong? I did it like this:

gnome-session-remove gnome-panel (enter)
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel (enter)
gnome-panel & (enter)

The terminal stays empty and nothing happens. I'm a real starter newb with Linux and any help would be awesome.

Thanks in advance

do you have a panel at the bottom of the screen? you can right click on it and goto new panel, then drag that new panel to the top and start adding your items

If it was only that easy.. The buttons that are draggable aren't the same as the default ones, for example, the wireless connection button..

Hi

the items you did above should do the trick, since your panel didn't come back, try these two commands in the terminal to force the panel to restart

killall gnome-panel
gnome-panel &

When i type:

killall gnome-panel
gnome-panel &

the bottom 1 gets removed aswell but shows up automatically 1 second later. Nothing happends with the top panel, it's still not by default.

Hi,
that means you have a top panel now?
To get back what you need right click -> add to panel
e.g. information field ##which will show update symbol and network symbol

care of ubuntu community help documentation:

"Missing panel applet

If you're missing the Network Manager panel applet, then (in Gnome) make sure that your panel contains the Notification Area applet. (Right-click on the panel to access the "Add to panel" command.) The NM applet can't be added directly to the panel, but is automatically part of the Notification Area. If you already have a Notification Area, but still no applet, then make sure the applet is installed. Just bc you have Network Manager does not mean you have the panel applet. Installing network-manager-gnome and restarting your system should make the panel applet appear in the Notification Area. (Instructions are needed for non-Gnome desktops.) "
