Try to activate Universe and multiverse. This may solve your problem. If not, follow this instructions http://www.winehq.com/site/download-deb

Thanks for the help. It led me to find under Applications-Add/Remove the Wine Package. When checket and ok'ed it downloaded Universe and then I could install Wine. I did this with the Add/Remove Function. My problem was caused by the book "The Official ubuntu Book" page 145 directing me to Synaptic Package Manager rather than to Add/Remove. Being new to Linux and ubuntu I suspect other items that throw beginners a loop will be found as I continue with setting up my system. Is there a way that I can help keep others new to ubuntu from having the same problems?
