newb just put ubun8.4 on EEE1000HD how to install drivers?

Asked by new2linuxEEE

Just got my Asus 1000HD netbook and love it. Ive just completed installing XP Pro Corp, Vista Ultimate and now (after several learning exercises in making it all come together :-) have installed Ubuntu 8.04 on it too. Ive installed 2gb Ram and a 250gb HD in the guy so it would handle all this well. Im new to the Linux world but like what Ive been exposed to thus far. One of my tech mentors swears by it.

Ive been to ubuntuguide.org and tried absorbing all I could but still cant figure out this driver thing.

As of now Asus's website leaves much to be desired and needed as far as tech info and drivers go for these netbooks. From going into driver properties in Windows I can tell you this much.

Seems the wifi card is a RaLink card. Its a wireless N card so it must be a newer model. The interface is the smaller than mini-PCI type (dont know tech name yet). Ive already DLed the newest Linux drivers from RaLink's site. Whether these are the proper ones???? 2008_0708_RT2860_Linux_STA_v1.7.0.0

The Ethernet is a Atheros chip. Went to their site, nearly nothing of use as drivers go. Seems the company isnt too concerned about driver support for their products. But in windows its using a driver for AR8121 8113 8114 Im not sure it its working now or not to be honest.

RealTek Audio chip I would guess this guy is good also but??

Intel 945 Video Im guessing this is good

Broadcom BT-253 bluetooth Seems to already be recognized.

I apologize if my stance seems dumb at this point. I can hold my own in the windows realm but Wow, I had no idea the inner workings of the technical GUI would be so different. I can see Linux is very command line happy. Good thing I cut my teeth in the Dos days.

Im sure a sizable book has already been written about the EEE 1000H series has been written but damned if I know where to go at this point. I cant figure out how to install a damn driver for now. Sigh.....

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks much from a new but soon to be long term user of Linux

Dave

there is a 'new kid on the block' just released based on hardy. see below

http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/

I have an eeePC 900 and installed it with no problems whatsoever; it worked out of the box and you can customize it to get the same interface as hardy - just follow the documentation at same url.

Oh wow, this is great!

Sure would be nice if Asus directly linked to this. Im sure theres all sorts of corp red tape sadly.

This should hold me over till I learn the ropes of Linux.

Thanks so much for the heads up on this wonderful build. DLing it now.
