[Errno 5] Input/output error after shred

Asked by Munzir Taha (منذر طه)

Hi,
I ran shred on my Dell XPS hard drive in order to sell it. I tried to re-install Windows and it cannot see the drive. Then I booted from an Intrepid live CD and tried to install but I got this error

The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

[Errno 5] Input/output error

This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

Maybe the CD you install from is bad, and not the hard drive?

You can check the hard disk with "badblocks".

The CD is not the problem here because I did the another install from this same CD beside as mentioned I also tried a MS Windows CD and it cannot recognize the drive.

I now managed to solve the problem by using a combination of booting from the live CD, windows CD, using gparted many times, many reboots and lots of patience in a non-systematic way so I am not sure how is it solved really or what caused it in the first place but I would consider it solved anyway.
