The Problem is probably the Monitor section. You might need more than 70 in the HorizSynch. You might get an indication in the log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log). However, be careful. A wrong setting might detroy your monitor.

Basically you need to change the Monitor to the right model.

I just saw that you run Kubuntu ;)

In Kubuntu you can go to

KMenu->System Settings-> Computer Administration -> Monitor & Display -> Hardware

Here you need to click on the button Administration Mode (left bottom area of window)

Then you can go to configuration of the Monitor. In Generic there are several Flatpanel resolutions shown. Make sure that your notebook screen supports the chosen one.

Apply the change and restart the X-Server. After the login you can go to the sam application, but this time you stay in the Size, Orientation & Positioning tab. Here you can change to the right resolution.

I hope this helps.

now i have only 1024x768, 1920x1200 settings, and still no 1440x900.. what is the problem now?

At first I would take out the "virtual 1920 1200" line in the screen section. And you might want to put the `1920x1200@60 in front of all the other modes. Maybe that helps.

Sorry.. I meant the 1440x90@60 ... in the screen and in the monitor sections.

I have been beating my head against the wall for hours on this issue. Reading every forum and article I could find. I ran across your post and thought "I can't be that f**king simple. Could it?". I did your steps and it resolved the issue. So, a virtual hug to you and I'm going to go find a bottle of scotch.

Configuration:
HP Pavilion dv9000t Laptop
Kubuntu 7.04-Release amd64
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 256MB
Screen native resolution: 1440x900 @ 60Hz
