Hi,

You can use the "synaptic" package manager to manage the software installed on your computer.

* start the package manager from System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager
* enter your password when prompted
* click the "search" button
* enter "game" or "wine" in the dialog.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software) for more info on wine. wine allows you to run certain Windows programs inside Linux.

you can use the wine-emulator to run win applications on a linux system. Google "wine" for more informations.
Search the ubuntu repository for some nice nativ software :-)

Some Windows software will work in Linux by using WINE (do "sudo aptitude install wine" to get it), but it's not guaranteed. To check any specific program, search for its name on: http://appdb.winehq.org/

To start looking for software, try going to "Add/Remove programs" in the menu. This provides a list of programs you can install (I think there are some 20 000 if you enable all the repositories). There should be a game section there. You can also browse on the web for games that have a Linux version--for easiest installation, look for those which are packaged for Ubuntu (in .deb files).

Gaming on Linux is generally considered a bit of a weak point--don't expect many 3D FPSs with amazing graphics (although there are people trying to make them...). OpenTTD and FreeCiv are some of the best known games for Linux, although there are plenty of others--warzone 2100, battle for wesnoth...

Many games will actually run natively in linux as well. For example many 3D FPS games (quake, doom, unreal tournament). These games can run natively because they are openGL. Any game that must be run in DirectX mode has to use ¨Wine¨.
