Install/Live Does Not Boot at All From Disc

Asked by toxyouxunknown

I purchased the Ubuntu DVD 6.10 on Amazon.com, since it would be my first experience with Linux. I have a Dell XPS M1710, WinXP, Intel Core Duo T2500 processors, 100 GB hard drive, 2 GHz, 2 gig RAM. Anyway, I'm really new to this whole thing, so it says that the DVD can run live or install. I popped it into my cd/dvd drive, switch the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive first, and waited. Nothing happened. When I say nothing happened, I mean, I saw the Dell loading screen, then the Windows screen... and then it just went to a black screen of nothingness. For a really long time. Freaked out, I popped the CD out and tried to restart my computer. Since that time until several safe mode boots, windows just went straight to a black screen of nothingness. I thought this might be because my hard drive was broken, but I got my new harddrive today and the same thing happened. This time, though, when it black-screened, I took the CD out before anything further happened, so my computer boots okay in Windows, at least.

The thing is, I have not found anything like this on the forums. I'm saying I never even get an option to "install" or "run live." I get nothing off of the CD. Furthermore, when I pop this dvd into the drive with windows up (which might be a bad idea, i don't know), it doesn't detect that there is a CD in the drive at all. Anyone know what this could be caused by?! I really want to run Ubuntu or even install it, but I can't even get anything to work.

To clarify, I didn't think the BSON was the reason my hard drive broke. I had a known hard drive error that required me to get a new hard drive. Upon rereading my entry, I realized it sounded like I thought the BSON meant my hard drive was fried, but the fried hard drive existed long before I tried Ubuntu. And now I have a new HD.

Have you compared the checksum of the DVD? If it's intact..

You should see an Ubuntu screen, before it even loads the system, so either you're not really booting from the CD/DVD, or the CD/DVD is corrupt or broken.

some bios systems in dell pcs have to have the drive sected as they come set to boot from a floppy disc drive
also they sometimes need you to press enter on the dell screen

I think the DVD was the problem. I contacted Amazon, and they're shipping me a new one, free of charge. I'll let you know what happens when I get it.
