Hi,

the easiest way to install wine is to use 'Applications'->'Add/Remove' and the search for wine

To install wine

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System->Administration->Software sources-> [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wine

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then there are a lot of howto on the net:
http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/05/18/how-to-install-windows-programs-in-linux-using-wine/
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine

Hope this helps

It looks you are trying to install a newer Wine than the one provided by Ubuntu.
If it is so, I recommend you to follow instructions from http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb, as it will be simpler and you will get automatic updates.

I was advised to use the following terminal commands to install wine.

          sudo aptitude update
          sudo aptitude install wine

by doing this there were so many commands coming in terminal and i still think that has been installed on my system. but i was also informed to follow a site for better knowledge...but the site showing that an extra option would come in 'accessories' totally on wine to do installation.but my system not showing such option in accessories. so.........what can i do now...........??

It sounds like you just want to install the version of Wine that comes with Ubuntu. You do not need a .tar.gz or .deb file for this. Aptitude is probably not a good recommendation for a beginner, either.

1. Click System menu
2. Click Administration -> Software Sources
3. In the "Ubuntu Software" tab (first tab), make sure there is a check mark next to "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
4. Press "Close" button and confirm the repository reload.

Then you can install Wine from Ubuntu:

5. Go to "Applications" menu
6. Click "Add/Remove..."
7. It will open a window called "Add/Remove Applications"
8. In the "Search" box, type "wine" and press Enter.
9. It will show "Wine Windows Emulator". If the box has a check mark in it, then Wine is already installed. If it does not, click the checkbox, then push "Apply Changes" and it will install Wine.

Is that what you are trying to do?
