PPP - 3G - Names resolved but can't ping

Asked by Craig Efrein

Hello,

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5. I have a Samsung z230 that I need to use to connect to work. Previously in Ubuntu 7.10 I was successful in setting up an internet connection via this phone. Using KPPP and following the same setup, I am able to connect to my provider, Orange in this case. Once connected, phone shows little internet globe, I can attempt to ping an address. Example, ping cnn.com. The name resolves to the ip address, but no return packets get to me. If I attempt to visit a page via firefox, it comes up blank. Oddly enough, skype works.

It might be useful to mention that I have VirtualBox and can connect to the internet via my Virtual Windows 2003 using the manufacturer's software. I have followed the instructions left by Question #7112.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Craig

Thank you, but shouldn't the update manager keep me up to date?

Ubuntu 8.10 will be officially released in October 2008

If you have set your update-manager

System->Adminitration->Software Sources [Updates] Release upgrade: "Normal release"

Will notify you for a new release...

Now you can try Ubuntu 8.10 but remember it is an UNSTABLE release by doing this:

-------------------------------------------------------

Upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy" to Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid"

Yuo must be connected to the net the process will download an lot of pachages upgrades from the net.

Please also be sure to have 1 giga of free space to be sure the updgrade process works good.

To check free space open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

First clean old cached packages, type:

sudo apt-get clean

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then to check free space:

df -h

To start release upgrade

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo sed -i "s/hardy/intrepid/g" /etc/apt/sources.list

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then to check your new ubuntu version:
