CTRL+ALT+F1 will switch to a console (text input). Logon and run:-

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

In there you can choose many options including the resolution - pick the defaults for most.

I would suspect however that it might be a refresh rate problem. Your screen can probably do the resolution Ubuntu is trying to do, but not at the refresh rate Ubuntu tries to. This is also an option you can set after typing the above command.

Once done, you can restart the gui with:-

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

Once in dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, how do you disable screen resolutions? I see:

[*]1600x1200
[*]1280x1024.

Now, how do I uncheck the box? If I highlight it and press enter, it goes to the next screen.
