By default, the root user don't have a password so you can't become root with su. If you really need to become root, type in the terminal:

sudo su

And enter your password. Et voila: you're root.

I am a very new user of UBUNTU.I have updated it fully.Now update manager is showing -one update is available and when i am attempting to install it, an error command is coming like the following-----

                    An error occured

                     The following details are provided:

             ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
              E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
             ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              I think 'E:' means one my hard drives.Actually there was a hard drive named E when i had used WINDOWS.
              ---PLEASE DO REFER SOMETHING EFFECTIVE-----
