greeter app crashes at startup

Asked by Mike Ciance

every time i start up ubuntu, it telsl me that the greeter app appears to be crashing, and that it is trying another one. i am then greeted with a different login screen. i was already having trouble with ubuntu not recognizing my keyboard, but if i reselected english as my language the problem would be fixed. this new login screen does not have a language option, so i am unable to log in at all.

I think the greeter without language option is kdm (I have the same problem now with feisty).

Setup gdm as your login for now:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

and choose gdm. Then it should use gdm after the reboot as the greeter/login screen. You can still choose kd as your session (or which ever other window manager you have installed).

Can you help with this problem?
