OOffice Failure in fresh, clean Edgy

Asked by John Buczek

Warning: Linux newbie... but I have 25 years experience supporting Win.

I've been trying to learn Ubuntu. I downloaded and installed Edgy clean and fresh then installed all current updates.

When I tried OpenOffice the splash showed and closed but the app did not open. I uninstalled OO then reinstalled it using Synaptic with no change.

I ran /usr/bin/oowriter from the CLI and got:

** (process:7197): WARNING **: Unknown error forking main binary / abnormal early exit ...

None of the other OO apps will start either.

This may not be relevant but I also downloaded TreePadLiteLX which worked fine in Dapper and it does the same thing although when run in the CLI the error is: "runtime error 230".

Any suggestions would be welcome.

This

seems to indicate that it could have something to do with your resolution settings in xorg.

Try to reconfigure your xorg.conf with

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I hope this helps.

Can you help with this problem?
