No sound on Intel HDA chipset (probably alsa related)

Asked by Ariel Vardi

Hi,

I can't get any sound out of my speakers. My machine is a Sony Vaio SZ110 and it has an ICH7 chipset (module snd_hda_intel).
The modules seem to be loaded properly, and I get no error whatsoever when I play an mp3 or any audio file. There's just no sound.

alsamixer reports my card as being HDA Intel and the chip as Sigmatel ID 7661. There is only one channel called PCM, it's unmuted and the volume is at its max.

I'm using Ubuntu Dapper with the latest updates and the ubuntu kernel: 2.6.15-16-686 (the machine has a dual core @ 1.83GHz).

At first I had breezy installed from a CD and it didn't work either. Upgrading to Dapper didn't help. The behavior has always been the same.

Anyone has a clue of what's going on?

Thanks in advance!!

Ariel

i have the same problem but i cant hear anything only from 2 speakers.
I added my problem in alsa bugs section. Try to re-compile alsa driver with utilities etc. and see which modules are loaded by your kernel.

I have a similar problem.
* laptop Panasonic Y5
* card HDA Intel
* chip SigmaTel STAC9200
* alsa only reports one PCM channel
* no error, just no sound
* kernel 2.6.15-26-686

Any idea?

Nicolas, there was a recent patch (two weeks ago?) in ALSA that maybe will be part of the next Ubuntu update.

Are you using a docking station with external speakers? If so, try undocking and seeing if you have sound.

The problem is still present, eith feisty. Actually, I can have some sound from the earphone jack, but the speakers are still off.

I checked, the speakers work with windows, so it's not a hardware problem. No docking station, no external equipment.

Alsamixer shows only 4 chanels : "master", "pcm", "capture" and "input source".

alsa for intel hda is still buggy...
