The system requirements do not meet your computer configuration. You need 384 MB of RAM. Therefore Install ubuntu through wubi. It is an official Windows Based installer in which you don't even have to make a partiton for it. Just start windows. Insert the CD. Click Install in Windows. Select the drive in which You want to install. And just say install.

For more info go to
www.wubi-installer.com

Pentium 3 Processor
256 MB of RAM
*Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista

*Wubi does not work with Windows Me

Taked from Minimum system requirements to install Ubuntu 8.04.1
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

"It should be possible to get Ubuntu running on a system with the following minimum hardware specification, although it is unlikely that the system would run well. You should use the Alternate install CD to attempt such an installation.

    * 300 MHz x86 processor
    * 64 MB of system memory (RAM)
    * At least 4 GB of disk space (for full installation and swap space)
    * VGA graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
    * CD-ROM drive or network card
"

I prefer to suggest you to install Ubuntu using the Ubuntu 8.04.1 alternate cd than Wubi...

i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x), here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto, the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/

Hope this helps

---------------------------------
What is Wubi

Wubi Ubuntu installation
Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/, is a Ubuntu installer for Windows. ( Windows UBuntu Installer ) WUBI
Wubi installer is a good method, but not the best, to install and try Ubuntu for Windows user, using an easy way.
Wubi installer don't make a real ext3 filesystem partition, separated isolated from Windows, it create a big file into the windows filesystem and install Ubuntu in it, so if you have problems into Windows partition (viruses, filesystem corruption) you can damage and loose all the installed Ubuntu.
