Ubuntu not responding to keyboard

so far, i have had no success at getting Ubuntu 6.10 to recognize any input from my keyboard. i have a dual-boot setup, and the keyboard works fine in my windows partition. my mouse works fine. i was able to complete setup using the on-screen keyboard, but now that Ubuntu is installed, i cannot log in because i am unable to type my username. since i cannot access Ubuntu to adjust the settings, I don't know what to do.
