When trying to install a new application on Add Applications I Get ERROR!

Asked by thomstarnow

When trying to install a new application on Add Applications... It tells me :-

Unable to get exclusive lock
This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) already running. Please close that application first

I havent got another package management running.

I have super user privalages and if i go to synaptic package manager it gives me this error :-

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

But when I do manually run that code I get this :-

dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege

Please can someone help me!!!

Thom

try running
sudo dpkg --configure -a
this will ask you your password and run as root.

My xumbuntu runs well with firefox but when I downloaded Opera the problems started. When installation failed I went to Terminal and tried to access my root directory and my password is continually rejected. Therefore I cannot use terminal to install Opera. I tried a full re install but at no point did it ask for my superuser password. If I try running sudo dpkg --configure -a then I just get another prompt. What gives?

You are getting this error because you interupted your last attempt to update your software or install something new. You should run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to fix the problem. This did it for me.

Thank You. I went to applications>accessories>terminal

And then typed sudo dkpg --configure -a

That did it for me.

Thanx guys
