I have Ubuntu 16.04 with Shotwell Photo Manager

Asked by Margaret Mackintosh

I have Shotwell Photo Manager with my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS system. When I attach my iPad to the computer via a USB cord, it comes up "Cannot claim USB Device -53"... What does this mean and how can I make it so Shotwell will 'see' the iPad and import the photos to my computer? Been using Dropbox but it takes hours to transfer a lot of photos (30) from my iPad to my computer. Need a faster way. Any suggestions.

If it takes a long time to upload 30 photos over to Dropbox your Internet connection must really suck. You could just leave it on overnight. It'll complete while you sleep.

Last time you disconnected the iPad from a PC, did you use the safe remove feature in the OS before physically unplugging it?

Do you have ifuse installed? Seems this can do it.

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man1/ifuse.1.html

Personally, I send files to my system using SFTP. It uses the WiFi network to send data.

Yes, I do have a slow Internet Connection and don't know what I can do about it. Live in the country. I did not know about any safe way to disconnect an iPad. Just plug it in and unplug it. I have no idea if ifuse is installed or not. How do you use SFTP to transferr photos/files from an iPad to Ubuntu Desktop?

I have checked out other Photo Managers online and only F-Spot seems to be a good choice. Unfortuneately it is not installed on Ubuntu 16.04 and I cannot seem to be able to install it as there is a package or something missing and it cannot install.

So I guess maybe my only option is Shotwell IF I can get it to transferr photos. Question is what "Cannot claim USB Device -53" means? How do I correct what ever this is? If there is a better way I would sure like to know what and how to use it. Not being able to transfer photos is costing me money?

Do you use the device in a Windows PC as well?

The new Computer is a Lenovo with Windows 10 installed. I had John - a Linux Computer repairman install Ubuntu 16.04 also. He didn't mess with the hard drive as it is under warranty, but added another hard drive above it and put Ubuntu on it. So it is actually separate from Windows, just on the same machine.

Just spent the last 15 minutes chatting with a Support Technician on Verizon - my Internet and phone company. When I told them how slow the connection was they ran several test with the cell phone and said that I should be getting top speed but the tests showed I am only receiving a little bit of the available service. Then then did a speed check on the Internet. Even I was amazed, my download speed was 0.76 MBPS and the upload speed test failed completely. They are putting a team to work on the problem and I should hear back from them in 3 or 4 days. Maybe this will also take care of the photo transfer problem too. But, I really think that is a separate issue because of the message I get when I try using Shotwell. Months and months ago, I had no problem using Shotwell. But, guess things have changed.
