Cannon LBP6200d won't print

Asked by chris jefferies

Tried everything I can imagine to make this printer work. I have installed and reinstalled many times. I've learned how to use the cups web page and take out the printer application in ubuntu. I've tried all weekend on Ubuntu 14.04 (and a little on 16.04 with similar results).

I am following the trouble shooting instructions at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

I am posting all the command (and a few others) with responses

Notes about the printer here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrintersCanon

Canon LBP-6200d
CNCUPSLBP6200CAPTK.ppd
Yes (supported)
Yes (works)
13.04 (32&64bit)
Works with v2.60 drivers from Canon. Do not turn on the printer until after installation.
32bit: Follow the readme of the printer driver. Change localhost to 59787.
64bit: Follow readme of the canon printer driver. Change localhost to 59787. Install libglade2-0 ia32-libs libpopt0:i386 from repository. (Standard Raring ia32-libs works.) (32&64bit)
Add sudo /etc/init.d/ccpd start and if you want the capt Statusmonitor started sh -c "sleep 30; /usr/bin/captstatusui -P LBP6200 -e" for each user to gnome-session-properties.
Allow each user to start ccpd as root.
Therefore add to /etc/sudoers following line for each user: (username) ALL=NOPASSWD: /etc/init.d/ccpd start

I have not set up the sudoers file. I am the only user.

I love ubuntu but this seems like the achilles heel of Ubuntu. In this day and age... Printers should just work.

My neighbors were hit by the osiris ransom ware and lost it all while running on Windows 7 and Macafee. Now I've got a very nice system running 16.04 and trying to convince them to move from Windows. But that's not going to work if I can't get their printer working. :(

Thanks for any clues...

If you run a GUI application as root and print, is it OK?

I ran:

sudo libreoffice

then

$ sudo su -
$ officelibre

And tried to print a document both times. Still nothing.

OK so we know it's not a permission issue. If you delete the printer in Ubuntu then power the printer off.

Reboot the PC then power on the printer, let it detect and install. Does it now work?

didn't help...

After deleting printer reference and rebooting no printer appeared. I quit the printer manager, removed the USB plug and saw no evidence of activity in syslog tailed.

Then opened printer manager again and when I went to add... then the printer appeared. As before, I added it, it found drivers (or at least acted as if it had), and as before, when I print test page, the print queue just sat there... processing.

There was a crash of cups, I think; in syslog:

Feb 8 01:29:18 freehand colord: Profile removed: LBP6200-Gray..
Feb 8 01:29:18 freehand kernel: [ 1067.454811] type=1400 audit(1486546158.985:35): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" profile="unconfined" name="/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf" pid=5539 comm="apparmor_parser"

Don't know what that means...

Also saw this in the syslog before the crash:

Installed fresh ubuntu 16.04

Installed print drivers: Linux_CAPT_PrinterDriver_V270_us_EN/64-bit_Driver/Debian/

Printer came up in Add dialog.

Now it goes to print queue and indicates it has printed. Released from the queue...

But still no prining...

Launching the new printer dialog:
