How do you assign drivers to devices in Ubuntu?

Asked by Diplomatone

I am new to Ubuntu, but have been around computer for a long time. Almost 10 years ago I looked at Linux as a alternative to that other operation system. It wasnt ready then. Now I am back, to see if Linux has matured enough for me to use it regularly. I have Ubuntu 8.04 on my system, but am having some problems with the drivers. Which leads me to my questions?

Is there a GUI interface that allows the user to assign drivers to devices in Ubuntu?
Is there a process by which I have to follow to assign drivers in Ubuntu?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Diplomatone

In ubuntu All required drivers will be installed automatically according to your hardware during OS installation itself.

There wont be any need for installing drivers separately for your sound card etc.

but you need to install driver only for your NVIDA graphics card.

Other than this there is no need for installing drivers separately like what you did in windows.

Yes, I see your point and so far Ubuntu has done a good job. Although, I have some instances where I will need to do some driver installation and setup.

It depends on what kind of device you're talking about. For instance, if you want to install a different driver for a printer, you'd do that through the System->Administration->Printing tool. Selecting a different video driver for X is different from selecting a different kernel module (if there's hardware supported by more than one different module; I don't know if there is).

Can you help with this problem?
