To help you better we need some infos about your hardware so please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

lspci is lower of LSPCI

I made a little terminal tool that i call mb_ubuntu_optimizer you can download it via torrent:

once it is downloaded please stop Transmission or your .torrent client then make it executable open a terminal from Applications->Accessories->Terminal:
and type:

chmod 700 ./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9

Maximize your terminal window or you will get a warning; then run it, type:
./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9

1) launched without parameter it do an automatic Firefox optimization: ./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9
2) launched with '?' parameter give you an usage help: ./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9 ?
3) launched with 'all' parameter it perform a check of your system and give you some hints: ./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9 all
4) launched with 'clean' parameter give you tip and info about kernel and command to remove unused: ./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9 clean
5) launched with 'menu' parameter give you a menu to set audio and/or detect GSPCA webcam: ./mb_ubuntu_optimizer-0.9 menu

i DL'd it but its asking me to choose and app to open it with . .

Please save to disk

i click on save file and then that Downloads pop up window from firefox opens when it finishes downloading, then i click on it and it says Choose App to open with . .

Please stop use Firefox to download the file... too diffucult to me to give you a simple "save to disk" instruction.
So i think is better for me to help you using terminal.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

i do everything the tutorials say and still no sound . . im obviously doing something wrong . .

Had you installed all required audio codes like gsteramer and win32 codes in ubuntu.

Install this from synaptic

System --> Administartion --> Synaptic package manager.

i typed in gsteramer in spm and it said no package is selected
and win32 codes in spm says no package selected
