Back up not recognising encryption password after clean INSTALL (16.04.1 lts)

Asked by David Archer

I have made a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS (Asus Motherboard/16Gb RAM,64 bit). After install and reintroducing all the old files, I backed the system up. That worked fine.
Instructed for automatic back up - reminder was given, new system password entered. Back up then asked for encryption password (Correctly entered) but still would not recognise it.
Thus unable to back up

did you download a torrent or a used copy?

I downloaded from the Ubuntu web site and burnt an image to DVD then installed the new system onto my original hard drive which had been fully formatted and cleaned.
I direct my back ups to an 2nd hard drive on the computer (sdb3) which still had the back ups from the old system.
I have backed up to a remote hard drive (samsung 1Tb USB3) without any apparent problem.

I have solved the problem by deleting all old back ups from the drive, formating the volume and then doing a new back up with my current system (new) password .
So I can only assume that back ups need the passwords of both the parent system and back ups passwords to agree
