installed a different dvdrom and can't enable it.

Asked by mistaboins

changed out my cdrom w/ a dvdrom and i can't enable it. comes back w/error code 32. can't read contents of the drive, can't mount etc., have checked and tried all the possibilities w/the jumpers, how can i re-detect and enable my cd/dvdrom drive? fstab says: /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 auto users,utf8,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0.
what to try next?

Hmm, if you disable the fstab entry and reboot what happens?

i.e. place a # before the relevant line for the CD mounting and see if the DVD drive gets detected automatically.

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

You could try loading the diskmounter applet for the toolbar by right-clicking on the top or bottom toolbar and choosing "Add to Panel". This APplet allows you to see what drives have been detected and can be manually mounted.

no, did not work, the device manager shows it , but i cannot enable it.it also seems to show my previous cdrom which i physically unplugged. of note: once i opened and closed the dvdrom door and it mounted! but just once and not again. i'm sure there is a simple fix, but i don't know what it is.

Can you check with dmesg command for errors or warning...

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

dmesg

or better

dmesg | less

Hope this helps

This are not errors, are usual boot messages from the system... ignore them...
You must try to find errors or warning at the end of dmesg when you play with cd...

You might see the /var/log/syslog to find errors or warning messages

From a terminal to see it in real time.. type:

tail -F /var/log/syslog

stop view the syslog with CTRL+C

Hope tih help
